Objectives / Objectifs

The goal of the project is to raise awareness about the impact of HIV and AIDS issues in the Caribbean through the production and distribution of two videos which can be used as innovative and creative tools to engage the Caribbean Diaspora in Ottawa, specifically youth between the ages of 15 and 24. The overall objectives of the project (from long-term to immediate) are to:

  • Strengthen Canada’s contribution to global HIV/AIDS issues by increasing the involvement of the Caribbean Diaspora in Canada;
  • Raise awareness within the Caribbean Diaspora in Ottawa of HIV/AIDS issues in the Caribbean;
  • Improve the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS programs targeting youth from the Caribbean Diaspora;
  • Promote a culture of leadership and active citizenship among youth;
  • Support youth in developing lifelong skills and knowledge (video production, HIV/AIDS and gender awareness, team building).

Outcomes / Résultats

  • 8 young people, 4 from the Caribbean Diaspora in Ottawa and four from Jamaica, will create a video that will explore various HIV and AIDS issues and innovative programming options in Jamaica.
  • A second video will be produced by two journalism students (one from Canada and one from Jamaica) and it will chronicle the total project and the experiences of the youth themselves as they undertake their assignments.
  • The two videos will be showcased at a series of screenings at 5 Black churches, 2-5 educational institutions and 4 community health centres located within the greater Ottawa region.
