Methodology / Méthodologie

With the support from Canadian and Gabonese donors, and in partnership with the local NGO 'Caravane Médicale pour le Gabon', CACHA has sent yearly health professionals delegations to Gabon between 2002-2010, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, along with graduates in nursing from the CÉGEP de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. These teams have worked in numerous isolated communities in Gabon, treated over 35 000 patients who have little or no access to health services, and distributed over several hundred thousand dollars worth of medication.

Objectives / Objectifs

After having supported the NGO 'Caravane Médicale pour le Gabon' in its growth and development, CACHA has now turned towards assisting isolated communities in the region of Moyen-Ogooué. Consequently, in 2007, CACHA sent a mission to Ngomo, in the same region where CACHA first set foot in Gabon in response to a request by President Rawiri to assist the isolated populations around Ogooué River and the surrounding lakes only reachable by riverboat.

CACHA's long term goal now is to contribute both to the restoration and expansion of the Medical Centre while improving the health of the local communities. In addition, CACHA will continue to organize yearly medical missions to visit the communities along the Ogooué River and surrounding lakes.

Outcomes / Résultats

In 2009/2010, CACHA was involved in designing, financing and the deployment of a Floating Dispensary for the Ngomo catchment area at a cost of $ 149,613. CACHA used the floating clinic during its 2010 mission which proved to be a valuable asset. The Floating dispensary was later donated to the Ministry of Health, Social Affairs, Solidarity and Family who agreed to continue the work started by CACHA. A partnership agreement with the Ministry of Health has been signed in 2011.
